The AfricanLII was set up with generous donations from the following institutions:

• Open Society Institute - set up and running costs for 2011
• Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa - set up and running costs for 2010/2011
• USAID through Freedom House - for the collation of index of African legal information to be published on the AfricanLII website and for the setting up of a legal information institute in Lesotho
• DLA Piper - for the development of AfricanLII

AfricanLII is committed to diversifying its funding pool to allow different institutions and individuals to contribute to the cause of free access to law in Africa.
