“Accessing Legal Information” Roundtable @ A2K Global Academy Workshop

AfricanLII attended and presented at the at the Access to Knowledge Global Academy Workshop, held 18-19 January 2011 at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa.

The Accessing Legal Information roundtable was chaired by Isabelle Moncion of LexUM and panelists included: Daniel Poulin (LexUM), Ivan Mokanov (LexUM), Darrel Pink (CanLII and Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society) and Mariya Badeva-Bright (AfricanLII).

The panelists discussed topics including:

The Free Access to Law Movement;
LexUM‘s work with JuriBurkina and JuriNiger;
The factors influencing the recent increase in access to legal information in West Africa;
Measures for evaluating the effectiveness of free access to law initiatives;
the African Legal Information Institute (AfricanLII);
the sustainability of free access to law initiatives;
the relationship between access to legal information, and democracy and the rule of law; and
“the public interest in making legal information easily accessible to everybody.”

The Forum at Mosi-oa-Tunya: Judiciaries and the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Africa

Just like the inevitable thunder of the "smoke" of the Zambezi at Victoria Falls, where this year's Southern African Chief Justices Forum conference took place, so is the flood of the Fourth Industrial Revolution engulfing the African justice sector. The theme of the conference was The Judiciary and Technology in Africa. In my presentation to the Forum, I proposed that African judiciaries have an opportunity to engage with the technologies shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution now. This engagement should focus on formulating policies and practices that support equitable development of new technologies in the justice sector and in a way that ensures respect for human rights, transparency, efficiency and enhanced access to justice. In addition, judiciaries should invest in programmes to train judges and equip the judicial administration with the necessary interdisciplinary skills and knowledge to fully engage with this new reality.

The Customary Land Act, 2016 of Malawi commenced in March 2018. The commencement notice was followed by Customary Land Regulations, 2018 in April 2018.
